The West Highland Way
Location of The West Highland Way
The West Highland Way is a long distance trail running for 95
miles from Milngavie on the outskirts of Glasgow, the largest city
in Scotland, north to Fort William which is at the foot of the
highest mountain in Britain.
Walking The West Highland Way
The West Highland Way is normally walked from south to north
and takes about six to seven days to complete. The
start is immediately outside the Railway Station at Milngavie,
Glasgow and follows a route to Drymen and onto Balmaha on the
south east shore of Loch Lomond.
The trial follows the east shore of Loch Lomond and on
reaching the north end of the Loch you walk through Glen Falloch
to Crianlarich, Tyndrum and Bridge of Orchy.
Here the trail enters more remote countryside as it crosses
to Inveroran and over Rannoch Moor to the Kingshouse
Hotel. From here you climb up what is known as the
Devil's Staircase before descending to Kinlochleven, which has
an indoor ice wall for climbers.
The final stretch runs round the south-west side of the
Mamores before heading down into Fort William and finishes
at the Bridge of Nevis within the town. For those
with some energy left, and for a finale, can climb
Ben Nevis.
There are various types of accommodation available en-route,
including hotels, bed and breakfast establishments, youth
hostels and bunkhouses. Camping is available but is
restricted on certain parts of the route.
Every year in June there is the West Highland Way Race where
runners complete the 95 miles in well under 24 hours, so it is
possible to do it in less than the average 6 -7 days. If
taking a week out to walk this route is a problem it can be
split it into different sections and the whole length walked
during several visits.
