Monadhliath & Laggan Hills

Binnein Shios

Shona & Laila on Geal Charn (Laila's 200th Munro)

Creag Meagaidh Group from
Meall na h-Aisre

Location of the Monadhliath and Laggan Hills

The Monadhliath is an area north of the A86 Newtonmore to Roy Bridge Road and for the purposes of this web site contains the Creag Meagaidh group of mountains to their west.

The Laggan Hills are a small group of hills south of Loch Laggan on the A86 Newtonmore to Roy Bridge Road.

Mountains of the Monadhliath (including Creag Meagaidh)

There are four Munros amongst the Monadhliath mountains.   Three of these Munros, are climbed from Glen Banchor, which is reached from the village of Newtonmore.

The Munros, Carn Dearg, A'Chailleach and Carn Sgulain can be climbed together either clockwise or anti-clockwise, the decision is yours.   A line of fence posts helps navigation in this wild and extensive area.

Geal Charn is further west and can be climbed from Glen Markie if conditions permit.   If the burn is in spate it will be easier to start the walk from Garva Bridge, which is a few miles west of Glen Markie.

There are five Munros in the Creag Meagaidh group of mountains.   The most famous is Creag Meagaidh itself which can be combined with the Munros Carn Liath and Stob Poite Coire Ardair starting and finishing from Aberarder.

The two other Munros, Beinn a'Chaorainn and Beinn Teallach are further west and their starting point is near Roughburn on the A86.

There are a few Corbetts in this area.   North of Newtonmore there is Carn an Fhreiceadain and a very remote hill Carn na Saobhaidhe.   To the east and normally climbed from beside A9 Perth to Inverness Road just outside Aviemore is Geal-charn Mor.

Above Garva Bridge is the Corbett Meall na h-Aisre and further west is Gairbeinn.

Glen Roy has four Corbetts but three of them have the same name, Carn Dearg.   The odd one out is Beinn Iaruinn.

Beinn a'Chlachair

Creag Pitridh & Geal Charn

Mountains of Laggan

This is a small group of mountains consisting of three Munros, Beinn a'Chlachair, another Geal Charn and Creag Pitridh.

The start of the walk is at a bridge over the River Spean just west of the west end of Loch Laggan and follows Estate tracks to beyond Lochan na h-earba.   The three Munros are then climbed before returning to this lochan.
