Moidart, Sunart & Ardgour

Sgurr an ba Glaise & Rois Bheinn

Loch Linnhe & the Ardgour Hills

Rois Bheinn and An Stac

Location of Moidart, Sunart and Ardgour

Moidart, Sunart and Ardgour are in the Lochaber District of the Scottish Highlands, west of the outdoor centre of Britain, Fort William.

It is bounded in the east, south and west by Loch Linnhe and the Sound of Mull and in the north by the A830 Fort William to Mallaig road.

This is not Munro country as there are no hills of that height in this area.   However there is a number of lower hills in this wild, rocky and remote part of the country that are well worth visiting and a requirement if you are a Corbett bagger.

Mountains of Moidart

Moidart is in the north-west of this area bounded on its south-east edge by Loch Shiel.   It has two groups of Corbetts both giving good quality walking days.

The first group starts east of Loch Eilt on the A830 Fort William to Mallaig Road and takes in the Corbetts Beinn Odhar Bheag and Beinn Mhic Cedidh.

The second group consists of the Corbetts Sgurr na ba Glaise, Rois-bheinn and An Stac starting from near Lochailort.

In addition to these Corbetts there are two very remote Grahams, Croit Bheinn and Beinn Gaire.

Mountains of Sunart

Sunart is in the west of this area and it's main hill walking interest is the Corbett Beinn Resipol.   The starting points are at Ariundle north of Strontian or Resipol Farm.

To the west of Sunart is Ardnamurchan which is the most westerly point in mainland Britain and worth a visit once you have finished your trek up Beinn Resipol.

Mountains of Ardgour

There are several Corbetts in Ardgour.    Stob a'Bhealach an Sgriodain, Sgurr Ghiubhsachain and Sgorr Craobh a'Ghaorainn can be combined and  climbed in a day's outing from Callop just off the A830 Fort William to Mallaig Road.

Carn na Nathrach is reachable from Glen Hurich and Sgurr Dhomhnuill can be combined with Beinn na h-Uamha.   This allows you to take in the Graham Sgurr a'Chaorainn.  The phenomenon here is that you are climbing one of the lowest Corbetts and one of the highest Grahams as there is only a metre of difference between their heights.

Garrbh Bheinn, which was my final Corbett, is normally climbed from Glen Tarbet.

Stob Coire a'Chearcaill is the most easterly Corbett in Ardgour and can be climbed from the north over rough and boggy ground or from the east up Gleann Sron a'Chreagain.

The most southerly group of Corbetts in this area is in the district of Kingairloch.   The Corbetts are Creach Bheinn and Fuar Bheinn and can include the Graham Beinn na Cille in a circular route.

There are also several other Grahams in this area to be visited.
