Location of Grey Corries and Loch Treig Hills

The Grey Corries and Loch Treig Hills are located in the Lochaber area of the Highlands of Scotland.   They lie south of Glean Spean on the Laggan to Spean Bridge road and east of the mountaineering capital of Britain, Fort William.

Mountains of Grey Corries and Loch Treig Hills

The Grey Corries, which get their name from the rock that covers the upper slopes of these mountains, consists of four Munros and several Munro Tops.   To do all the summits is a long day, as it involves a couple of out and backs along some of the ridges.

The most westerly Munro, Sgurr Choinnich Mor, can be climbed separately from Glen Nevis while Stob Coire an Laoigh, Stob Choire Claurigh and the lower Stob Ban can be climbed from Corriechoille in Glean Spean.   This is still a long day and you may wish to consider doing Stob Ban on its own by walking up to the Lairig Leacach Bothy and ascending it from there.

To the east of the Grey Corries are two interesting and rocky hills.   The Corbetts Cruach Innse and Sgurr Innse  can be climbed from the track leading to the Lairig Leacach Bothy.

Heading further east, and located west of Loch Treig are Stob a'Choire Mheadhoin and Stob Coire Easain, commonly known as The 'Easains'.   On the east side of Loch Treig are two further Munros Stob Coire Sgriodain and Chno Dearg.

The normal approach for the mountains on either side of Loch Treig is the hamlet of Fersit which is reached from the A86 Laggan to Spean Bridge Road.   However an alternative route is to take the train from Tulloch Station to Corrour Station and return either over The Easians or the two Munros to the east of Loch Treig.

To the south of Stob Coire Sgriodain and Chno Dearg is the lone Munro Beinn na Lap which is on the north side of Loch Ossain.   To the south of this Loch are the Munros Carn Dearg and Sgor Gaibhre.   There is no road access to these mountains so the most convenient approach is to take the train to Corrour Station.

Located at  the west end of Loch Ossain is the Loch Ossian Youth Hostel which has recently been upgraded and is eco-friendly.    This is a small but very busy Hostel so early booking is required.

Additional Information

A good base for walking in this area is the bunkhouse at Station Lodge, Tulloch.   It  allows easy access to the Glasgow to Fort William trains.   The train can be used to travel to Corrour or Rannoch Stations for day walks in remote country or to climb the Munros in that area.
