Fannaichs and Ullapool Hills

Loch a'Bhraoin

The Deargs

Beinn Bheag

Location of Fannaichs and Ullapool Hills

The Fannaichs are a group of mountains in the north-west of Scotland.   They are bounded on the east side by the A835 Inverness to Ullapool Road, on the north side by the A832 Braemore Junction to Gairloch Road and in the south by the A832 Garve to Achnasheen Road.

The Ullapool Hills are those hills to the south-east of the small town of Ullapool, a popular tourist stop and the ferry terminal for Stornoway in the Western Isles.

Loch Glascarnoch

Mountains of the Fannaichs

The Fannaichs are a group of nine Munros so you will need at least two visits to bag them all.

It is possible, if you cycle to Fannich Lodge from Lochluichart on the Garve to Achnasheen Road, to climb seven of the Munros in a single long day, but most walkers will break them down into several groups.

Meall Gorm and An Coileachan can be paired together with a starting point on the A835 north of Loch Glascarnoch.   Sgurr Mor and Beinn Liath Mhor Fannaich are also a pair, climbed from the A835, but slightly further north at Loch Droma.   However these two pairs can in fact be climbed together although the start and finish are nearly three kilometres apart.

The other five Munros are climbed from the A832 Braemore Junction to Gairloch Road beside the track that leads to Loch a'Bhraoin.   From here a path leads over a bealach to Loch Fannich.

To the east of this path are Meall a'Chrasgaidh, Sgurr nan Clach Geala and Sgurr nan Each.   To the west are Sgurr Breac and A'Chailleach.

A couple of Corbetts are also found in this area.   Beinn Liath Mhor a'Ghiubhais Li is above the south-west shore of Loch Glascarnoch and can easily be climbed from there.

The other Corbett, Creag Rainich lies between the Fannaichs and the Fisherfield Munros but the easiest approach is from Loch a'Bhroin.

Ullapool and Loch Broom

Mountains around Ullapool

The Ullapool Hills consist mainly of the Beinn Dearg Group of Munros.   Beinn Dearg is the highest mountain in this area and can be climbed from Inverlael on the A835 Ullapool to Inverness Road together with Cona Mheal, Meall nan Ceapraichean and Eididh nan Clach Geala, although the latter two can be climbed separately.

There are two outliers, Am Faochagach and Seana Bhraigh.    Am Faochagach can be climbed from near Loch Glascarnoch but Seana Bhraigh is a remote Munro and requires a bit of planning.   It can be climbed from Inverlael in the west or from Corriemulzie in the north but both routes involve a lot of walking although on the northerly route a cycle could be used.

The sole Corbett in this area is Beinn Enaiglair which can be climbed in conjunction with the Graham, Meall Doire Faid starting and finishing at Braemore Junction.
